Grant funds will be used to provide supportive services to persons living with HIV infection within the East Central region of Indiana. Services made available will include transportation and food and nutritional services. AIDS Task Force also plans to provide gas vouchers and bus passes to clients so they can affordably attend doctor visits regularly either local or non-local. AIDS Task Force anticipates serving a total of approximately 43 or more clients. This is the fourth grant the Foundation has made to AIDS Task Force.

Appetite For Life, Inc.

Appetite for Life was established for the purpose of providing home-delivered meals to persons living with symptomatic HIV/AIDS. Grant funds will be used to purchase bulk food supplies for their home-delivery program. This is the first year Appetite for Life has received a Gamma Mu Foundation grant.


Catskill Rural AIDS Services, Inc.

Catskill RURAL AIDS Services will apply this grant to their Program to Alleviate Isolation, which provides meals in a congregate setting, day trips, support groups, and weekend workshops/retreats to alleviate the sense of isolation experiences by those living with HIV/AIDS in rural areas. This is the first year Catskill Rural AIDS Services has received a Gamma Mu Foundation grant.

David's House Compassion, Inc.

Grant funds will be utilized to support David's House's Gay and Lesbian Youth at Risk Project. The Project provides HIV/AIDS education, peer training, and empowerment to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth people in Northwest Ohio. This is the fifth grant the Foundation has made to David's House, Compassion.

Flathead AIDS Council, Inc.

Grant funds will be used for two related projects. The first will provide an HIV+ speaker in local schools. The second will provide alternative therapies for those living with HIV/AIDS. The goal of the first project is to continue to reach young people with the message of careful behaviors in regard to sexual activity and/or drug use. The goal of the second project is to offer alternative therapies such as massage therapy, acupuncture, along with naturopathic and herbal treatment plans. This is the second grant the Foundation has made to Flathead AIDS Council.

Fraternity House, Inc.

Grant funds will be used again this year to support Fraternity House's Rehabilitation Activities Program (RAP) which strives to meet the needs of individual residents so they can rebuild their health and regain their highest possible level of independence. One key component of RAP is transportation. Grant funds will be used for this purpose providing approximately 1,500 client trips during the grant year. This is the fifth grant the Foundation has made to Fraternity House.

Resource Center of Dallas

One of the many programs sponsored by the Resource Center of Dallas (dbd John Thomas Gay and Lesbian Community Center) is a Domestic Violence Program (DVP). Grant funds will be used for this program to help provide services to gay male victims. These services include overnight shelter, emergency dental services, HIV/STD testing and treatment. The DVP works with existing area service providers to educate their staff on the specific problems and issues related to gay and lesbian victims while providing sensitivity training to their staff. The center additionally provides seminars, produces brochures and news articles concerning gay and lesbian domestic violence. This is the third year the Resource Center has received a Gamma Mu Foundation grant.


The Walt Whitman Community School

The Walt Whitman Community School is a private alternative secondary school that emphasizes and acceptance of sexual orientation diversity. Grant funds will be used to supplement the school's educational, living and job skills, and housing programs as well as to supplement the long-term financial assurance needed to gain accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This is the third year Walt Whitman School has received a Gamma Mu Foundation grant.


We Are Family

We Are Family provides support services for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgendered, and questioning youth. Grant funds will be used to help operate the SafeSpace program, which provides weekly peer support groups and continues to be the organization's foundational program. The program's major purpose is to provide a setting for the disclosure of feelings, resolution of problems, and building of self-esteem. This is the third year We Are Family has received a Gamma Mu Foundation grant.

Grant funds will be used to expand an existing media/education program from three to six months. The media campaign focuses on billboard, television, radio, print ads and direct mail and makes media materials available to GLBT groups across the state. Goals of the program are to expand the billboard campaign from the current April – June to include November – January, to expand direct mail from the current 4,000 to over 12,000 pieces, and to purchase extra television coverage during the holiday season. The Alliance works with organizations in other Southern states to offer assistance and establish campaigns in their locales. The Alliance is a new grant recipient this year.


Center for Independent Documentary: “Dangerous Living: Coming Out in the Developing World”

As the highest rated proposal in this category, this one-hour documentary is the winner of the 2003 Richard Karpawich Research and Public Education Award. This is the third consecutive year that Gamma Mu Foundation has partnered with the Center for Independent Documentary helping to produce television documentaries for airing on PBS and for distribution to classrooms and other educational environments. The initial effort, Oliver Button is a Star, is being shown in 2002 throughout the country as a PBS special. The second effort, Tearooms to Chat rooms will document to Gay male sexuality and its explosive impact on society since Stonewall. This current effort is destined to air on PBS during 2003 and will explore and expose the realities emerging gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people are facing daily in the Global South.

GLSEN/Miami will use Grant funds for their Safe Schools Project, which increases understanding for educators, students, and the community on issues of sexual minority and how those issues effect the learning environment for those students and others. Components of the Program include (1) Awareness Training, (2) Holocaust Training, (3) Field Trips Gay/Straight Alliances, (4) Speakers Bureau Training, and (5) Collaboration Know-How. This is the second year GLESEN/Miami has received a Gamma Mu Foundation grant.
