A voluntary spirit, or philanthropic instinct, is alive and well in our society in the shape of informal community groups, religious organizations and charitable non-profit organizations. It is a fact that as a nation, we routinely give 2% of our annual gross domestic product to them - in excess of $175 billion annually - and our commitment to this charitable world is essentially unshaken by political or economic events.

It was such a spirit that, in 1988, moved the Gamma Mu Fraternity to establish its own organization, The Gamma Mu Foundation, to support the unmet needs of the gay community on a nationwide and continuing basis. Under the Internal Revenue Code, the Foundation qualifies as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization. While initial funding was by the founding Board of Directors, the intent has always been that ongoing support be provided by Gamma Mu members, their friends, and those interested in the work of the Foundation.

As described in its Mission Statement, ". . . a perpetual, philanthropic fund to provide financial assistance for the health, enhancement, and pride of our community."
